The Private Pilot Certificate opens up a world of possibilities, no matter what your goals are. For aspiring professional pilots, it is the first step toward realizing their dreams of flying commercially. It is also an ideal qualification for those who wish to expand their travel options, explore new destinations, or enjoy the satisfaction of flying with friends and family. Training consists of three stages: solo, cross-country, and practical test (“check ride”) preparation. Applicants for the Private Pilot Certificate must complete a knowledge test and a practical test consisting of an oral examination and flight test. The FAA requires applicants to have 40 hours of flight time, although we find that students typically need approximately 50 hours of flight training and 20 hours of ground instruction.
Applicants can expect to invest between $8,000 to $12,000.
